At Google I/O 2026, Google Research and Synaptics announced a partnership built around a single premise: advanced AI workloads should run locally, on device, without routing data through the cloud.

The Synaptics Coralboard at the center of the collaboration is a compact hardware platform powered by a neural processing unit capable of running vision and generative AI models on-site. Google’s own leaders described it as a platform for building “private, always-on experiences” that lower the barrier to real-world Edge AI deployment.

The message is clear. The future of high-performance AI is not exclusively in the cloud. It is at the edge, close to where data is generated.

Why this shift is happening now
